課程概述

Fall 2011 Freshman Writing

Course description

This beginning composition course helps you write decent and sophisticated English sentences and organize them into coherent paragraphs to make your point. We will examine the general writing concept and some simple composition theories and discuss key elements such as the modes, the thesis statement, the topic sentence, transitions, writing styles, and other such writing components. Emphasis will not be placed on correctness alone, although grammatical correctness is assumed. If you do need help with grammar, I will refer you to the Department’s special, zero-credit Grammar Tutorial course.

You will be asked to formulate and arrange your ideas in a series of mature sentences using idiomatic and contemporary expressions and phraseology. Lectures will be conducted mainly in English, but feel free to participate in discussions in English or in Chinese. There will be plenty of short writing exercises, but as in all other courses I have taught, you are required to bring your thinking cap as I do not always prescribe correct answers. I expect you to shed your high school skin and grow into a college student.

Requirements

I do not require a textbook, but I will show you some very helpful writing guides. I will email you in advance the week’s reading assignment and you are required to read them all before you come to class. In addition to frequent Q&A exercises, there will be 5 to 6 short (1-2 paragraphs), in-class writing assignments, 2 in-class or take-home mini-compositions, plus a final. Regular and punctual attendance is a university regulation and is mandatory. You are entitled to the following formula to calculate your final course grade provided that you fulfill all the above requirements: in-class assignments 30%, take-home 30%, final 40%. Historically, only those who possessed an outrageous record of unexcused absences failed the course.

You are expected to be able to present your points in short, coherent essays on general topics at the end of the semester.
